STRUCTURE AND ROLES IN BASQUE TRADITIONAL FAMILY
In the Basque rural context, the family represented the backbone of society, organized in a series of substrates of blood and affective proximity. In contrast to what we usually find nowadays, the core lineage of the family («leinua») was constituted by a greater number of members of several generations who lived together and shared the tasks to ensure the sustenance of its members and the maintenance of the home in the best conditions. This nuclear group was known as «etxekoak» (those who live at home) and used to integrate the married couple, the parents of one of the spouses, the descendants and, sometimes, unmarried siblings, as well as other people and beings who cohabited under the same roof (servants, adopted orphans, close friends, pets, cattle, bees…).
One detail that we must keep in mind is that the consideration of consanguinity («odoleko») took a back seat to the relationship of «etxeko»(the one who belongs to the family house), being especially noticeable in funerary practices and the subsequent mourning process. The unity between the house and the tomb was indivisible, since the connection between the living and the dead was much more powerful, understanding that the latter contributed to secure prosperity and harmony in the home, if they were properly attended. So much so that, when a new member of the family was incorporated by marriage or birth (once the «atsolorra» and baptism had been performed), one of the first rites that were carried out was to present him/her to the family burial so that «those who preceded us» («gure aurrekoak») would acknowledge its annexation and ensure his/her well-being, as long as this member fulfilled his/her duties regarding the ancestors worship.
Within this central nucleus, we can distinguish subassemblies according to age range, but also based on the position of authority or right of intercession in relevant decisions. The eldest couple was known as «guraso zaharrak» or «etxeko zaharrak«, while the young couple was called «senar-emazte gazteak». On the other hand, there were the elder uncles and aunts («osaba zaharra»,»izeko zaharra»); next, the sons and daughters («seme-alabak«).
On the hierarchical scale, the elderly and, particularly, the eldest couple, stood in a prominent position, being addressed as «berori”. This formal form of speech was also applied to figures such as the mayor, the priest or the doctor. Although the matriarch («Amagoia» or «Amandrea«) and the patriarch («Aitagoi» or “Aitejaune») were not the owners of the house and, therefore, they did not rule it, their wisdom was taken into account. In the following status range, the Etxekoandre or Etxanderea (Mistress of the household) and the Etxejaun or Etxagun (Master of the household) stood as full sovereigns on a civil and spiritual level. On the third stratum, it was located the «Etxegungai» or the «Etxanderea», heir or heiress who took charge of the main obligations according to the foral regime, being usually the firstborn: «seme gehien» or «premu» (boy); «alaba nagusia» or «andregaia» (girl). On a lower scale, the rest of brothers and sisters were placed. Below these, other members.
Much of the family’s daily gatherings occurred around the domestic fire («sutondoan», «supasterrean»), which constituted a spirit in itself which symbolically represented the heart of the home and had to be nourished regularly to ensure the overall wellbeing of the space (leaving offerings to propitiate or placate other entities). This task was reserved for women, specifically the Etxekoandre, although it could be replaced by the grandmother, the eldest daughter or the daughter-in-law. In funerary ceremonies, the Andereserora had the right to put out the fire as a sign of mourning and could help to light it again after the funeral and burial. Men were forbidden to touch the fire or remove the stew without the express consent of the housewife.
In relation to the hearth, there is a proverb that refers us to a social custom which has been maintained to certain degree in some villages: «Zer dio sutundokoak? Zer baitio zutaizinekoak» (What does the one next to the fire say? What the one in front of the fire says). This saying refers to the right to sit closer or farther to the fire depending on the status within the family. The Etxekoandre is the one who has preference to position herself in the front line, because she is in charge of feeding the fire. In front of her, the Etxejaun is usually placed. Next to the lady and lord of the household, the elderly members are located, usually liven up the evenings with life experiences, anecdotes, popular stories and other oral teachings. Behind the main authority figures the firstborn (male or female) sits, learning from their elders. In last position, there are the rest of brothers and sisters, who take the example of the heir or heiress and are responsible for serving their elder members, if required.
In the past, the functions and labours carried out by different family members were more differentiated by sex and better defined according to their status. It was necessary to distinguish between the house («etxea») as a central dwelling and the peripheral area («etxaldea«) which comprised the annexed spaces (orchard, garden, inherited lands, communal forest, chicken coop, stables, haystack, barn, store of tools and machinery…). The interior of the home reserved for rest, food processing, personal hygiene, intimate life and private devotion constituted a primarily feminine space. The only external exception was the orchard or garden («ortua» or «baratz») because, beyond its of subsistence or ornamental function, it originally fulfilled a funerary purpose as a tomb for unbaptized infants in Nafarroa Beherea, Gipuzkora and some areas of Bizkaia. On the other hand, the agricultural-livestock and forestry exploitation or all those constructions reserved for production (artisan workshop, shepherd’s hut or “txabola”, blacksmith shop, ship, etc.) were essentially masculine spaces. Inside the domestic site, the man had access to the stable, taking care of the animals and applying protection measures. There, he collaborated with the woman in warding rituals. He usually looked after the big heads of cattle, while the smaller animals were attended by her.
The Etxekoandre as a symbolic representative of Mari in the microcosm of the home (mundane refuge and devotional sanctuary), presided over cultural, social, religious rites and folkloric practices. Among other things, she was in charge of protecting the house and «throwing out the bad airs» (to remove Aide or Aideko, genius of the air which could bring disease and misfortune); blessing the inhabitants of the house, to the animals and to the crops, at least, once a year (commonly, during Candlemass or Saint Agatha); keeping the hearth alive and honouring the domestic spirits; paying homage to the ancestors (Etxekojaunak) periodically; communicating cultural and moral values, preserving oral tradition and transmitting customs to the next generations. She and other women of the home also cared for the children, the sick, the elderly and the poor; they fostered good relationships between relatives, mediating to resolve their differences; they managed the household finances; they wove community relations with the neighbourhood and established alliances.
We must bear in mind that, in other ways of living different from farming and cattle breeding, such as grazing, fishing, charcoal production or military service, the husband’s prolonged absences forced women to assume functions that were normally reserved for men.
In addition, Basque woman, when widowed (particularly in Navarre), became usufructuary of her husband’s property, administering it as she considered most convenient (until she remarried). This gave her a superior degree of freedom and authority, in comparison to the autonomy of the Castilian woman. In Castille, the conjugal regime of welfare was predominant. According to it, the property acquired during the marriage was split in half, returning the down payment and the dowry to the widow in the first place. In other words, there was a legal differentiation between the property of the deceased spouse and the goods of the survivors. After paying off the debts of the husband, the patrimony reserved for the wife was returned and, afterwards, the property was divided in half among the wife and the descendants. The remaining goods were liable to be inherited. By contrast, the foral regime was designed to keep the patrimony united and avoid the smallholding that could turn the family house unproductive, although the usufruct of widowhood sometimes generated intrafamilial issues with sons, daughters and in-laws. After the departure of the eldest wife and, in the event that the heir or heiress had no progeny, the closest blood relatives remained vigilant until the assignment of the main assets («trongalekoak»).
Traditionally, the full assumption of office of the family home involved:
- In case of having a beehive, announce the decease to the bees, and present yourself as the new master or mistress. In case of not owning it, you must do the same in front of the tomb or family pantheon so that the deceased became aware of it.
- Open the doors and windows to renew the air and acquire the right over the building.
- Touch the iron chain of the chimney («laratza») or swear in front of the hearth as a way to take responsibility for the care of the family and become the social representative of the group.
- Go to the stable where the animals repose to take ownership of the cattle.
- Spill dirt to represent the right over the orchard and the plots.
- Pluck grass as a way to illustrate the dominance over pastures.
- Cut a branch of a tree to symbolize the right to take advantage of the resources of the forest (preferably, asking permission to the plant).
- Receive a tile from the house. This element was the symbol of protection par excellence and represented the connection with the heavens cosmogonically.
The distribution of family tasks has undergone a major transformation as a result of the industrial revolution and the gradual incorporation of women into the professional environment in order to contribute with a greater amount of income and achieve their financial autonomy, occupy social spaces and become actively involved in political life.
Nevertheless, women have traditionally continued to worship the deceased, both by going through prayers within the home and by leaving offerings on the tombstone of the church («jarleku«) or the cemetery. While it is true that our current relationship with death is significantly more distant, in the collective unconscious of our people certain considerations and precautions regarding the souls that have departed are still alive, often materialized in devotional gestures or folk customs. Even more so in rural areas. If we look closely at the special distribution of attendees at a funeral, obsequies or anniversary masses, we will notice that the Etxekoandre still maintains a privileged placement (front row or family seat), followed by her aunts and/or sisters, eldest daughter or daughter-in-law and the rest of her daughters or women with a secondary status in the family line. Behind them, we can see more distant relatives, neighbours or friends.
This allows us to analyse the second family stratum, or «senideak», composed of members who were born in the original mother house, but emancipated themselves from it, although they returned to its bosom on important dates (All Saints, Christmas, patron saint festivities …) or family events (funerals, weddings, baptisms, communions…). At the time when the nuclear family met with the independent members, there was talk of «familia osoa » or “familia guztia» (complete family).
Within this second group, godparents and godmothers were included, often uncles and aunts of the babies who were baptized and bore the costs of the ceremony and subsequent banquet. Before the Second Vatican Council, this role was much more relevant, to the point that a godfather («aitatxi»,»aitaponteko») or godmother («amatxi»,»amaponteko») contracted the obligation of the upbringing and guardianship of the infant in case of orphanhood or abandonment. In addition, it conferred the right to impose his or her name on the godson and played a complementary role in his moral and spiritual education. Since the acceptance of the godfathership or godmothership possessed such connotations, the father and mother asked for the explicit consent of the person and a public oath was contemplated. The relationship godfather-godson/goddaughter or godmother-godson/goddaughter created very special bonds, whether or not they were consanguineous.
In towns like Valcarlos, in certain situations peasants asked: «Noren sematxia duxu»? (Who’s the godfather/godmother of this child?). In the popular mind it was assumed that the godson or goddaughter ends up acquiring character traits from his godfather or godmother. Hence, someone who radiated health, strength, kindness and was known for his righteousness was chosen, since it was believed that the infant would inherit such qualities. If the child exhibited reprehensible behaviour, it was mentioned: «Atsa ona etzion eman«(his godfather did not give him good support).
As a curious folkloric fact, it is worth noting that the godfather or godmother was the one who was in charge of reciting the Creed during the baptism. In the popular mindset it was widespread that the person who did not pronounce this prayer correctly put the infant at mortal risk. Azkue collected some folk beliefs where the poor recitation of the Creed could result in the child being wayward or becoming miserable, having little understanding or presenting stuttering, increasing the probabilities of dying young, or becoming a «sorgin» (witch). In the Navarrese Pyrenees, there was the custom to bring a companion to the baptism because, if the godfather or godmother said the prayer incorrectly, the guest could rectify his/her mistake.
The importance of patronage was decreasing from the first son or daughter to the following descendants. The grandparents were frequently the godparents of the firstborn and the uncles or aunts took care of the following children, although there were complex variations. For example, in Ezkurra, Amorebieta, Oñati, Lekunberri or Liginaga, maternal grandparents were the godparents of the first baby, while paternal grandparents looked after the second descendant. On the other hand, in the Burunda region, the godparents of the firstborn were the maternal grandmother and the paternal grandfather. In the event that the grandparents had died, the next of kin replaced them. In some towns of Navarre, such as Artajona, Sangüesa or San Martín de Unx, there was only one godfather or godmother. In the cases of neediest families, they tended to look for a godfather or godmother of better social standing who could fund his/her studies, pay a percentage of the wedding expenses, offer a legacy and even include him in his/her will. Currently, it is customary for wedding godparents to adopt this role as caregivers of the firstborn.
In a third circle was located the kinship («senitartea»), comprised by distant relatives («urrineko senideak») and next of kin («erantsiak«). The plenary meetings that brought together the extended family fulfilled a double social function: honour the ancestors collectively and maintain affective bonds. In the past, kinship relationships were nurtured mindfully because the survival and continuity of the lineage depended largely on it. In addition, if a member was offended, he was defended by his relatives to maintain the good name of the clan. Also, a small personal fault or affront could have greater consequences on the family’s reputation and its relationship with the rest of the neighbourhood. For that reason, Basques were more concerned about the impact of their words and actions the community and have been acknowledged by their sense of honour, commitment and loyalty.
In summary, we may conclude that, those who had been born under the protection of the same mother house felt deeply attached to it as a living entity with a recognisable personality which conferred huge part of its identity on them. Thus, the joys and achievements in the family were celebrated with greater enthusiasm, while the fights were perceived with more gravity, seeking mediation to bring opposing positions closer together and resolve conflicts as soon as possible. Likewise, although emigration is always a painful experience, it was much more dramatic for someone who understood the ancestral and mundane bonds with such rooting.
This form of traditional organization, although it is in danger of extinction, still preserves certain resonances in social usages and rites. Not being aware of it or its implications complicate the understanding of certain figures, roles and interactions greatly. The right manner to address someone, a daily gesture or a cultural social custom we do not detect or do not apply properly, may condition a friendly relationship with a member of the community who still follows this way of conducting himself or herself in the rural environment.
In that sense, it is advisable to pause, observe more and be less eager to act, not accelerating the natural rhythm of exchange and progressive adaptation to a context that is governed by rules we have not already integrated, unless we have been educated in a context with these peculiarities.
Certain formalities, although they may seem obsolete, are necessary to preserve the essence behind them. We cannot force others to adapt to emerging changes at a speed and shape which result convenient for us. Even less so if we are in someone else’s house and must respect his/her rules and etiquettes.
This same reasoning could be applied to relationships with the invisible entities which live in Basque territories. Although the way to interact with them has evolved throughout history, understanding older interaction «protocols» may help us to understand different behaviours or signs so that we can interpret them correctly in a symbolic key.
Learning to discern what is essential and what is accessory to build new models of fraternal and community relationship in a respectful and organic way is a task that requires research, reflection, involvement and social commitment.
